MIDDLE NAME CHANGES

Did you know that middle name changes or adding a middle name are among the most popular name changes submitted to The UK Deed Poll Office?

There are no formal restrictions on adding or changing a middle name; simply apply for a Deed Poll with us and add a middle name of your choice!

Once you receive your Deed Poll, you can update your official documents (passport, drivers licence, etc.) and have your new middle name officially recognized.

If you want to drop your middle name, you will also need to apply for a Deed Poll, as you will not be able to change your name on your official documents without it.

Considerations when changing your Middle Name

Please be advised, unless all your documents are changed, your new middle name will not be recognized as your public name. Mere possession of your Deed Poll does not give your name public recognition.

Although there is no immediate requirement for you to change all your important documents (like your driving licence, passport, bank records, etc.), if you are planning on migrating to another country, it is imperative that all your documents share the same name.

Adding a Middle Name

You may add more than one middle name to your name.

However, you should be aware that HM Passport Office can only print a maximum of 30 characters as your first name, and this includes your middle name(s).

Additionally, HM Passport Office can only print a maximum of 30 characters as your surname. If your new first name and/or middle names exceed the limit, you should request that they add an abbreviated form in the main part of your new passport, and that they print the names in their entirety on the observations page.

Dropping Your Middle Name

Another very common request is from people who want to drop their middle name.

Similarly to adding or making changes to your middle name, you can also decide to get rid of your middle name. People choose to drop their middle name for various reasons, and the process is the same for adding a middle name that we discussed above.

If you decide to drop your middle name, you will need to order a Deed Poll without your middle name. After receiving your Deed Poll, you can remove the middle name from all of your official documents and only use your first and your last name.
