An estimated 5.5m British people live permanently abroad – almost one in 10 of the UK population.

If you are a British expat and you want to legally change your name our article will help guide you through the process.

Below is a list of the commonly asked questions that we receive from expatriates.

Can I change my name while living abroad?

Yes! You can use our deed poll service to quickly and easily change your name. Though if you change your British sounding name to something more American the Queen will never forgive you (we’re joking… or are we).

Queen Elizabeth

How many times can you legally change your name?

You can change any part of your name as many times as you want as long as you are not doing so for fraudulent purposes.

Will my passport name change to match my new name automatically?

Your passport will not automatically change to your new name. We have a great guide that will walk you through the steps that you need to take to have your passport match your new name.

This is a very important step to remember. You want to make sure that your passport matches with your new name. Otherwise you can run into some issues when trying to travel.

How much does it cost to change your name outside the UK?

£18.50 per Adult Deed Poll and £18.50 per Child Deed Poll.

START AN ADULT DEED POLL - £18.50

START A CHILD DEED POLL - £18.50

Can my Deed Poll be sent to my out of country address?

Unfortunately, we can only send a Deed Poll to residences with a UK address at this time. We recommend using a friend or family members UK address.

Can a foreigner be a witness on my Deed poll?

In the UK, a Deed Poll witness can be any UK resident over 18 years old. As an expatriate, your deed poll should be witnessed by a solicitor or notary public.

Conclusion

We understand that the weather in the UK caused a lot of you to run to sunnier countries and we are not judging you for it (traitors). However, just because you live in a foreign country that does not mean you don’t have the same ability to change your name as any other British citizen. If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please reach out and we will be more than happy to answer you.

The UK Deed Poll Office is not a government agency. Our function is purely as a document provider for the self-declaration of an unenrolled deed poll. We are here to assist in your name change journey, as we have done for over 100,000 UK residents.
