Changing one's name is a significant step in the journey of gender affirmation for many transgender individuals.

It reflects not only their true identity but also their courage to embrace and express their authentic selves.

At the UK Deed Poll Office, we’ve analyzed the latest data on transgender name changes in the UK.

Our findings reveal intriguing trends and patterns that shed light on this deeply personal process.

Transgender Name Change Statistics

1. Keeping the Same First Letter

One of the first decisions in a name change process is whether to maintain a connection to the original name.

Our data shows a noteworthy trend in this regard.

The majority of transgender individuals do not keep the same first letter of their original name.

Specifically, 1,057 people, or 69.72% of total applicants, choose new names that begin with a different letter.

Conversely, 459 individuals, or 30.28%, opted to keep the same first letter, indicating a desire to retain some continuity with their past identity.

Middle names hold personal and familial significance. Our analysis highlights three main trends among transgender individuals: keeping, removing, or changing their middle name

Our data reveals that the majority of transgender individuals choose to make changes to their middle names during their name change process.

  • 80.87% (1,260 people) changed, added, or removed their middle name.
  • 10.21% (159 people) did not change, add, or remove their middle name.
  • 8.92% (139 people) never had a middle name and did not make any change.
