DVLA - Once I have my Deed Poll, how do I change the name on the log book for my car?

By law, you must update your vehicle log book (V5C) if you change your name.

Only one person’s name should be in the log book.

If you have the new style log book with multi-coloured numbered blocks on the front cover, you will need to:

  • write the new name in full in section 3 - do not give initials
  • send the whole log book to the DVLA address in section 3
  • include proof if you’re legally changing your name, for example a deed poll

If you have the older style log book you need to:

  • write the new name in full in section 6 - do not give initials
  • sign and send the whole log book to the DVLA address in section 8
  • include proof if you’re legally changing your name, for example a deed poll

Afterwards, you will send this V5C to the DVLA at the address, Swansea, SA99 1BA.

Your new log book should arrive within 4 weeks.

The UK Deed Poll Office is not a government agency. Our function is purely as a document provider for the self-declaration of an unenrolled deed poll. We are here to assist in your name change journey, as we have done for over 100,000 UK residents.
